v1 Jesus began both to do and to teach - Doing precedes preaching
v2 apostles He had chosen
v3 the promise of the Holy Spirit
v8 you shall receive power

Sermon

Feast of Pentecost didn't start at the point where the Holy Spirit was poured out
- 50 days after Passover
[Feast of weeks (7 weeks after Passover)/ Feast of first fruit]
- Festival characterized by prayer and worship.

God used the opportunity of having many people in one place.
- The purpose of God is always global.  It's always with a global community in mind

God's wonders are to be transmitted by every people of every language

The apostles were told to 'wait' and they understood it meant;

a) Be together in one place/one accord: 
- they were sharing everything, had all things in common.
- Unity doesn't mean always having the same opinion. You can be in one accord

b) Be in fellowship
- division is an anointing breaker. 
- Unity is a must for the outpouring of the Holy Spirit.

c) Learn doctrine: 
- God can't trust ignorant people with the nations.
- Rejecting knowledge leads to us being rejected. 

KJV Acts1 v8 Witnesses unto me - before we witness to other people, we need to be able to stand before God.

The work of the Holy Spirit is first internal before external. He changes your behaviour; realigns your work/expertise with His word i.e. your belief system changes.
- When the Holy Spirit comes into your life He gives you boldness. 

Book of Luke: Focus on the life of Christ
Book of Acts: 2nd volume of Luke- focuses on the work of Christ through the apostles and establishment of the Church.

The anointing of the Holy Spirit

Luke 4:18-19
- Anointing- enablement/empowerment to perform and operate in area of expertise
- Insight, wisdom and understanding bestowed upon one to operate.
- The same anointing which was on Christ is upon the Church to do as He did.

i) Preaching the gospel to the poor - Preach at all times, if necessary use words.
- Works precedes words. 
- Poor is in all aspects i.e. material, emotionally, spiritually etc

ii) Heal the broken hearted
Issue of justice. 
- Generosity, compassion & hospitality
- We can't pretend to try and solve issues outside if we can't do so inside
- Healing is restoration to the original state

iii) To proclaim liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind
- We should be able to give hope to hopeless

iv) To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord
- Year of Jubilee: people set free from slavery and set on the path of prosperity
